Have you ever asked yourself “Why do some people become successful very quickly while I have been working my guts out for years?”
It seems like some people just “get lucky” or “they’re in the right place at the right time”…
…But what if it was more calculated than that?
What if they could predict what was coming and they simply just showed up at the right time to collect?
Now I’m not a huge fan of ice hockey, but I do know one thing that has stuck in my mind for years.
One of the greatest players of all time is Wayne Gretzky. He supposedly had God like talents and held 61 records for the sport when he retired.
When asked by a reporter what was the secret to his success, he simply replied (and I paraphrase) “I don’t think about where the puck is now, I think about where the puck is going and I move there.”
So why the hell would I tell you that?
Have I got wires crossed? Maybe…
But what if that’s all you had to do to become a wildly successful market leader? Simply show up where the puck is going.
We all know the world is changing rapidly which is a great thing for entrepreneurs because it means there are more opportunities. So give yourself permission to sit down today and ask yourself these questions:
Where is the puck going in my industry?
What problems are going to appear in the future?
How can I solve just one these problems?
How can I monetise the solution to the problem?
To kick start your ideas think about this:
At some point in time computers were invented as high powered calculators. Then this guy called Bill came along with some friends and made programs that would go on these calculators that would give them extra functionality. So they decided to call them “personal computers”.
Microsoft was born.
Then someone thought it would be a good idea if these computers and the extra functionality could talk to each other because it was inconvenient to save something on a disk, and post it to the other side of the world where someone would take the disk and put it in a computer to access the data.
The internet was born.
People then started sharing files and information, but it looked terrible, so the design inclined hippies wanted to make it more beautiful.
Websites were born.
Everyone started getting a website and then there was another problem… They were too hard to find and too many to remember.
Search engines were born.
At the same time, people still had to get in the car drive to the shops, get out, walk inside find what they want, pay for it, get back in the car and drive home. So someone decided it would be good if we could use our high powered calculators to order our goods online and have them delivered to our home.
This is great, but now have 2 more problems that need solving…
People were stealing money being transferred via these high powered calculators over the internet, so internet security was invented.
The other problem was that people where getting fat because they didn’t have to go to the shops, so then some people thought they would sell weight loss programs over the internet, to the people that didn’t want to get in the car drive to the shops, get out, walk inside find what they want, pay for it, get back in the car and drive home.
The point is there are going to be many more shifts over our lifetime and I want to make sure that you are there when new industries are born, or existing ones turn 180 degrees, because if you are where the puck is going then you can’t help but be successful.
Go get em!
